Dr. Burke

Originating from Warren, Michigan, Dr. Burke attended Brother Rice High School. After high school he joined ROTC and graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1973 with his D.V.M. Today, Dr. Burke continues his education through attending veterinary conferences and seminars highlighting the latest veterinary techniques. He remains active in the Northern Michigan Veterinary Medical Association inwhich he has served as president. He served on the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Council. His involvement with Michigan State University continues as a member of the Practitioners Advisory Council for the Small Animal Clinic at the College of Veterinary Medicine. His other professional memberships include the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. He currently serves on the board of the Cherryland Humane Society while teaching a course for the CHS as well.Through a love of Nothern Michigan, Dr. Burke and his family moved to beautiful Traverse City in 1980 after completing a three year commitment to the Army and practicing at West Shore Veterinary Hospital, a five-man veterinary hospital in New Cumberland, PA. Since beginning his work at Grand Traverse Veterinary Hopsital in 1980, Dr. Burke has continued his commitment for the compassionate and professional treatment of all Northern Michigan animals. Never without pets, he has surprised his wife and family over the years with a number of rescued animals.The father of five children, he stays active in Kiwanis where he has assisted in the Kiwanis Record Eagle Ski School for a number of years. He is also active in his local parish, Marriage Encounter, Boy Scouts, and still finds time to cycle during the summer and other general forms of exercise. Of course, with his extremely active children and two grand-children, he has witnessed many sporting events.

Dr. Erlewein

Growing up in Fennville, Dr. Erlewein started his education at a nearby parochial school. He graduated from Fennville High School and did his undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and Western Michigan University. A strong love of animals took him to Michigan State University where in 1967 he graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine.From 1967 to 1973 he worked in a three-doctor, two-hospital, small animal practice in Wyoming, Michigan where he met his wife, Kathy. After their marriage he moved to her hometown of Traverse City in 1973. In May of 1973 he began practicing with Richard Kratochvil at the Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital. In 1981 he relocated to the Oakwood Veterinary Hospital on the east side of Traverse City until 2002 when he returned to Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital.Dr. Erlewein is a talented writer and has had many scientific papers published in Feline Practice and Modern Veterinary Practice journals as well as writing an article concerning Feline Leukemia testing for Cat Fancy magazine. He is the lead author of the veterinary text Instructions for Veterinary Clients which was first published in 1976 and is currently in its 3rd edition.He is a member of the Northern Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He also belongs to the American Animal Hospital Association as a part of a Member Hospital.He is the proud father of two wonderful boys. His three cats and a happy, loving dog are there to greet him and Kathy at the end of the day. He is an amateur radio operator and holds the highest amateur radio license, the Amateur Extra Class, and belongs to the local emergency response team. He is a Volunteer Examiner for the amateur radio licensing program. He has enjoyed music and for some time was a member of a band which played around Traverse City.

Dr. Jossens

With a strong desire to love and care for animals, Dr. Jossens easily found herself drawn to veterinary medicine. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1981 with her veterinary license, she moved to Grand Rapids where she was employed as a veterinarian at the Grand Rapids Animal Clinic and with the John Ball Park Zoo. Here also she was able to work with another interest of hers, raptors. She worked with the Raptor Rehabilitation in Grand Rapids. She also found time to work for the Blandford Nature Center.After working downstate for a number of years she and her family moved to the beautiful Traverse City area. She has worked for at veterinary hospitals in town until she found her home at the Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital. A skilled surgeon she enjoys many aspects of veterinary medicine, especially the variety of patients and the wonderful people that she meets every day. Because of her work with the nature centers and the zoo, she enjoys exotics as well as cats and dogs.Family has always been important to Dr. Jossens. She has three wonderful children, two sons and a daughter, who have shared much with her over the years. A love of sports is shared by the family and Dr. Jossens coached soccer for nine years. Dr. Jossens also loves the outdoors, currently enjoying kayaking during the entire year. Yes, even in the winter months she is out kayaking. She is excited to expand her career in veterinary medicine with both Dr. Erlewein and Dr. Burke.

Dyan

Dyan is another one of our helpful veterinary assistants. You may have the chance to see her for pet instructions or sometimes she aids our receptionist up front. She has been an important member of our staff since joining us in 1999 after working at Bokhara. She is willing to work hard and loves the chance to learn new techniques. She has a winning smile and is dedicated to the animals.When Reggie was living here at the clinic, he would often interrupt her duties to demand "pats" from her. She has a calming nature with many of the patients. And she enjoys the continuing education classes when she is able to attend.Dyan is a native of Elk Rapids graduating in 1998. At school she attended the Career Tech Center where she earned a junior apprenticeship in art. A love of travel has taken her to Florida, many national parks, Vancouver, British Columbia. She and her husband enjoy the outdoors including snowmobiling, camping, mountain biking and long walks. She also enjoys horse back riding. Photography is another interest of hers which she puts to great use at the clinic taking photos of our patients.

Dani found herself working at a veterinary hospital while attending high school in East Jordan. Her quiet nature seemed perfect for the animals and her co-workers enjoyed her enthusiasm and work ethic. So, after graduating it seemed natural to continue to work in this field. She has joined us here in August, 2007 and has been a welcome addition to our family.Dani has been married four years and has a diverse family. Her family consists of three Labradors, two horses, one cat, one bird and one fish. She enjoys horseback riding as one would assume and enjoys the out of doors, but only during warm weather. Despite the fact of being raised in the northern woods, she prefers to stay indoors during the snow season. The snow is fine to look at from indoors is her philosophy.

Jennifer

Jenni joined our staff in 2005 working mainly as a receptionist but also more than willing to assist in the treatment of animals whenever needed. Most recently, Jenni has changed her responsibilities to that of a veterinary assistant. She has a warm personality which brightens our clinic and a laugh which is highly contagious to the staff.Jenni graduated from Mesick High School and then attended GRCC, Oakland Community College and NMC where she studied Criminal Justice. She has lived in Grand Rapids, Mesick, Waterford and Grand Haven, but, she is happy to return to northern Michigan. Her great loves outside the clinic are her Boston Terriers, Mia & Jada, and her cat KC. In addition she loves shopping, traveling, reading, watching movies, camping, and spending time with family & friends.Having played basketball from 5th grade to graduation, she truly enjoys the sport. She has assisted in coaching in elementary school, junior high school as well as the varsity girls basketball team from 1995 to 2002. She loves football, track, and baseball. (Go Red Sox!)

Sandy

Sandy is one of those friendly faces that greets you when you arrive at Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital. While working at GTVH, Sandy also works as the Milton Township Deputy Clerk. Originally from Orchard Lake, she has enjoyed living in the Grand Traverse area for the last 20 years. Sandy has worked as an EMT but loves working with the animals now. She has dogs and horses but emphasizes that she loves all animals. Riding horses, gardening and photography are some of her past time enjoyments. She has a terrific sense of humor and her laugh can be contagious.

Tami has been a member of the GTVH family since August 2008. Before coming to GTVH, Tami worked for two with the Cherryland Humane Society. She also worked for 13 years within a screen printing shop owned by her husband and herself. Along with her husband, Tami's family consists of two wonderful dogs and five loving cats. Tami is a wife, a mom and of course a spoiling grandma. Tami enjoys spending time with her friends and family. Such time is filled with various activities like walking her dogs, photography, kayaking, and skating. And of course, one must never forget the satisfaction from curling up with a good book and cat for company.

Trooper is our crazy but lovable office cat. Like the saying goes, "Dogs think they are human, Cats think they are God" and Trooper is certainly no exception. He is extremely adept at demanding attention, treats, and overall respect. But like most cats, while he can be overly affectionate, he also airs on the side of indignant arrogance. In order to encourage and foster a passion for small animal care, each summer the GTVH staff selects one or two motivated veterinary or pre-veterinary college students for summer internships. Within this working environment students are able to apply their academic education while drawing upon the expertise of our knowledgeable doctors and staff. Annual Check-Up

ROUTINE ANNUAL CHECK-UP

We recommend a thorough examination once a year. Your pet ages at a faster rate than humans. As such, early detection of physical changes in your pet can aid in correcting potential problems. DOGSOne year for your puppy is equivalent to 7 years of growth for a human child (i.e. a 4 year old adult dog is equivalent to a 28 year-old young human adult). However, it is important to note this rule of thumb varies for the breed and size of your dog. CATSCats age at a different rate as follows:First Year equivalent to 15 year-old teenagerSecond Year equivalent to a 28 year-old young adultEach additional year (after the second) is equivalent to 4 human years (i.e. 6 year old cat is equivalent to 52 year-old human adult).Vaccinations are given at the yearly exam. Our veterinarians and staff will assist you in selecting the vaccination protocol tailored to your pet's specific and unique needs.

Our clinic is equipped with an extensive in house laboratory facility as well as a partnership with outside laboratories offering direct computer access for rapid results.

• Radiology

Useful in diagnosing fractures and other internal problems, our radiograph equipment is an ever-useful tool.

• Ultra-sound

A new technology to our office provides images that complement and enhance traditional x-ray examinations.

• Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic medical procedure used to assess the interior surfaces of an organ by inserting a tube into the body. Endoscopic procedures are considered to be relatively painless.

Our clinic is equipped to handle a wide variety of surgical procedures. More commonly we provide spaying, neutering, and declawing as well as dental work. We are also able to handle more extensive procedures as the need arises. Our veterinarians are continuing to further their education staying up to date with the latest techniques and technology.

Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital has partnered with local veterinary clinics forming the Grand Traverse Area Emergency Veterinary Group to provide 24 hour, 7 days a week, Emergency Service.For after-hour emergencies, please call our office phone (231) 946-3770 at anytime to reach the on call veterinarian. You will be provided with the name and phone number of the ON-CALL veterinary clinic. The Grand Traverse Area Emergency Veterinary Group was originally established in the 1970's in order to provide quality after-hour emergency care. All veterinarians within this group have open communication with each other regarding your pet's emergency visit. Thus, your local veterinarian is informed the next business day regarding your pet's emergency visit allowing for continuing care with your local veterinarian.

New Client / New Patient

If you are a new client or have a new pet addition to the family please fill out our New Patient Form for your next visit. You may bring this form with you to your next appointment, email or fax it to our office at your convenience.

Surgery Consent Form

If your pet is scheduled for surgery, you will be asked to review and sign a Surgery Consent Form on the morning of the surgery. In order to save time, we recommend our clients review this form before the morning of surgery.

Clients will receive a phone call the day before surgery to discuss food and water restrictions for your pet. Typically we recommend no food past 7 p.m. the night before surgery. Your pet may have water up until the morning of the surgery at 8 a.m. However, each surgery is tailored to an individual pet's needs so be sure to check what the specific requirements are for your pet.
